These are some major conflicts and resolutions from the book:
1. A white girl shoving Cassie and making Cassie apologize for not listening to her; the resolution: Cassie being falsely nice and then shoving her back.
2. Lightning strikes crops and the fire goes toward the Logan family's trees, threatening to destroy the entire cotton field; the resolution: Lots of people from the town and neighboring plantations come to help put the fire out.
3. Cassie's mom gets fired from her teaching post because of T.J., a friend of Stacey's, telling the school board she gave him a failing grade on purpose; the resolution: Cassie's mom working at home and relying on Cassie's dad and the cotton to get them money.
4. Cassie and her youngest brother Little Man get whipped by their classroom teacher for refusing to use some old school books with offensive charts in them; the resolution: Cassie's mom, who was working at the same one-room school, glued brown paper over the charts.
